Custom Events: Use Case

The best way to explain how to use Custom Events and Custom Journeys triggered by these events is through a practical example.

Use Case: Annual Customer Event

Every year Parana organizes a customer happening to thank existing customers for their loyalty and introduce new customers to the company and its employees. This is an event over 2 days. All customers get a voucher with a QR-code that needs to be scanned at the entrance of the venue. Once they scan the code, they are registered as being present including the day on which they were there. This information is stored in an external system and later on transferred to Engage via API into a Custom Events List for our audience Parana Users.

This is what our Custom Events "AnnualCustomerDay2024" looks like for audience "Parana Users":

Their presence is stored in the field Present with status Yes as well as their arrival day (Saturday or Sunday).

In the Custom Journey, we need a Custom Event Component and select our Custom Events List. For every new event entering this Custom Events List, the journey is triggered.

The data in the Custom Events list can be used to personalize the message as well as for filtering. Filtering is possible in the Audience Filter Component and the Split Component. In the above journey we are using a Split Component using the day as criteria.

As a result, a personalized email is sent using data from the Custom Events Lists as well as information related to the specific day. Below is an example of an email message where the Custom Events data is available from the Personalization dialog and used in the email.

As a last step, the contact can click a link in the email to enroll for the next customer day in 2025. As a result, a new record will be created in a Custom Events List "CustomerDay2025Enroll", holding the enrollments for 2025.

Note: To be able to save this journey, a link needs to be drawn from each of the Email Components to a Page Component. To keep the journey simple, we haven't added these components to the above journey flow.
